Coping
Higher Ground
“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I am.”

Psalm 61:2
Overwhelm narrows the world. The body tightens, the mind races, and every problem begins demanding an answer at once. In that state, urgency can sound like truth. David gives us a wiser prayer. He asks to be led somewhere steadier than his present emotion can take him.
The rock in Psalm 61 is God himself. David does not deny the distress in his heart. He brings it into the presence of someone stronger. Healthy coping begins there. We notice what is happening, name it honestly, and seek enough steadiness to choose our response.
Higher ground may include prayer, slow breathing, a quiet walk, a trusted person, sleep, food, or a temporary pause from the decision. These practices do not replace faith. They help the body settle so the mind can recognize what faithfulness requires.
Overwhelm says everything must be solved now. Wisdom separates the immediate need from the larger problem. Ask what must be handled today, what can wait, and what belongs in someone else's hands. A calmer nervous system will not erase the mountain. It can help you find the next safe foothold.

Overwhelm needs a steadier place to stand.

A Question to Carry
What would help me rise above the intensity of this moment?

Practice This Week
When intensity rises, pause for five minutes. Put both feet on the floor, breathe slowly, and name three things: what is happening, what you need right now, and the next safe action. Delay major decisions until you can think beyond the pressure of the moment.
